Of those, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me reached the top spot twice, first in 1974, then in 1992 as a live duet with George Michael. In addition, Elton John had the best record of chart consistency with hit songs in the top 20 every year from 1971 through 1999, 29 years straight. But this can only be said by counting Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me for both 1991 and 1992.

In 1988, Elton John hit number 3 with Candle In The Wind, a song from his 1974 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The 1988 hit version was a dedication to Marilyn Monroe. Candle In The Wind 1997 was a rewritten version, dedicated to the recent passing of Princess Diana. This version reached number 4 on the top 20, but went on to become one of the top selling single records of all time. The other side, Something About The Way You Look Tonight, became a top 20 number one.
